In honor of our 100th birthday, Variety invited Jeff Zucker (president, NBC Universal TV Group) to talk back about his coverage in the ‘bible of showbiz.’
What do you make of our slang, words like “prexy” and “helmer”?
“It’s unique babble that has actually transcended Hollywood and is a part of American popular culture. It is what it is.”
Has Variety ever made a mistake in covering you?
“If they make one error, it’s probably that they sometimes jump to conclusions and try to assess trends when nothing’s quite there yet.”
Do you mean, when we write, “Zucker is said to be seeking such and such qualities in a replacement for so and so?”
We’ve tagged you “NBC’s wet-behind-the-ears programming topper” and “the undisputed king of morning television.” Sounds like a young overachiever success story.
“That’s a nice way to put it.”
How do you rate us?
“I think by and large Variety‘s coverage of Hollywood is excellent and makes the Hollywood fantasy come to life every day. It’s really the public record of this crazy town.”
