Sarasota fest can rest ’til March

Busey, Kazan, Hauer feted with career salutes

SARASOTA, Fla. — The Sarasota Film Festival wrapped up its seventh year (Jan. 28- Feb. 6) with a full slate of unspoolings, music and fancy-dress galas.

Guests ranged from Danish helmer Bille August to alt-rockers Ted Leo + the Pharmacists, performing as part of the Independent Visions concert series.

Connie Nielsen, Jerry Springer and Paul Reiser were also in attendance, repping their respective films.

“Reefer Madness” star Christian Campbell, who had recently returned from Sundance, remarked about Sarasota’s statelier demo, “They’re just a little quieter here, but they still recognize rock and roll.”

Gary Busey, Lainie Kazan, Rutger Hauer and Leslie Caron all received special career salutes.

Sandwiched between Sundance and Berlin, Sarasota fest returns next year with a later start date: March 31-April 9.
