Anyone who watches TV sports is familiar with the impact Arledge had on the medium. The inventor of the “up-close and personal” brand of sports journalism that still dominates, Arledge is responsible for everything from “Monday Night Football” and “Wide World of Sports” to the now-standard slow-motion replay. He also helped make the Olympics must-see TV in the U.S.
His impact on TV news was almost as profound. Arledge took the also-ran ABC News and transformed it into an award-winning powerhouse. He created “Nightline” and “This Week,” which during the reign of host David Brinkley redefined the sleepy Sunday morning public-affairs format.
