British designer Paul Smith had celebs and the city’s style set seeing stripes at the recent opening of his first L.A. boutique.
Smith — who boasts a sizable industry following, thanks in large part to his perfectly tailored, signature striped shirts — welcomed Joy Bryant, Ed and Danna Ruscha, Amanda Demme, ubiquitous stylist Rachel Zoe and others to a sprawling 5,000-square-foot space on Melrose Avenue painted Pepto Bismol-pink. “I’m ready to start nudging, not pushing, (Angelenos) to be a bit more adventurous with color, embroidery and the like,” Smith said.
Mitch Glazer, for one, doesn’t need a nudge. “Paul is the Keith Richards of designers,” he said. “He’s as cool as you get.” Glazer’s wife, Kelly Lynch added, “Mitch only wears Paul. I think he’s sold more Paul Smith than Paul because every time he’s in one of the suits, a million people ask what he’s wearing.”
