Scribe Guare feted in Gotham

NEW YORK — Playwright John Guare paid unlikely thanks to his parents when accepting the Obie award for sustained achievement May 16 at Webster Hall. Guare recalled asking Joe Chino to produce a play, only to be told he was only doing plays by Aquarians. Guare said he promptly took out his driver’s license to show he fit the bill, concluding, “If it wasn’t for my parents conceiving me in May, I wouldn’t be here tonight.”
