Film has its auteurs, the theater has Michael Bennett. He took the rare “conceived by” credit on that paean to the Broadway gypsy, “A Chorus Line.” “Seesaw,” “Ballroom” and “Dreamgirls” were also Bennett shows all the way. His talent as one of Broadway’s genius choreographers was evidenced early on with “Promises, Promises,” “Company” and “Follies,” for which he received a co-director credit with Hal Prince.
