LONDON — Kristin Scott Thomas unveiled her all-time favorite movie “Le Mepris” at Notting Hill’s Electric cinema and member’s club Monday. The event was put on by Grand Classics who organise special screenings in aid of the British Film Institute.
Introducing the pic she first watched in 1981, Scott Thomas praised “the extraordinary way Godard uses color” and “the precious, fragile performance” by Brigitte Bardot, the films captivating female lead. The Oscar-nommed femme thesp (“The English Patient”) also expressed admiration for the films honesty, agreeing with Godard’s sentiment “that in cinema, like life, there is nothing secret.”
Godard’s bleak story of the collapse of a love affair into open contempt and loathing – “I hate you because you leave me cold” – did not dampen well-heeled Notting Hillite attendees’ collective enthusiasm. As the end credits rolled, they rushed upstairs for a lavish cocktail party in the members bar which overlooks Portobello Road.
