L.A.’s fashion cognoscenti barely had time to recover from Marc Jacobs’ blowout bash last week before Marni and designer Consuelo Castiglioni swept into town. The opening of the Italian label’s West Coast flagship — located about a block away from Jacobs’ new stores on Melrose Place — lured nearly 400 guests, including party hosts Claire Danes, Brittany Murphy, Carolyn Murphy and Maggie Gyllenhaal (who arrived with mom, writer-producer Naomi Foner).
But the woman of the hour was Castiglioni, and she wasn’t about to let the downpour put a damper on her first trip to L.A. “The rain is a very good omen for us,” said the designer, who dressed the host committee to the nines in Marni. “It has rained on the opening of our boutiques in Milan and New York. It’s good luck!”
Suvari was among the chorus singing her praises: “We need more designers like her to come to Los Angeles. It’s such a shame that L.A. isn’t as fashion oriented as New York. I heard that Hogan on Robertson might be closing. Even Costume National on Melrose isn’t selling. I’m like, ‘Please don’t take them away!’ “
Among the other fashion junkies ogling Castiglioni’s colorful, eclectic looks were Nicolette Sheridan, Jewel, Rashida Jones and Shiva Rose McDermott.
