Marcy Carsey & Tom Werner

TV Titans

When Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner recently announced that they had shut down operations, it marked the true end of a TV era. Carsey and Werner were the last of TV’s major independents; they launched such legendary series as “The Cosby Show” and “Roseanne.” Carsey and Werner were former ABC programming execs who left the corporate world in the early ’80s. Their first series, “Oh Madeline,” didn’t last long, but then came “The Cosby Show.” It’s hard to understate the impact of “Cosby” on the business. The show is often credited for saving the sitcom genre in the early ’80s, and ushered in the era of big-bucks off-network syndication deals. Carsey-Werner (which, for a time, was actually called Carsey-Werner-Mandabach, with the inclusion of partner Caryn Mandabach) was behind shows including “A Different World,” “3rd Rock From the Sun,” “Cybill” and “Grace Under Fire” and “That ’70s Show.”
