Marc Jacobs’ launch party for his trio of new stores in and around Melrose Place couldn’t have been more delightfully contrary to the designer’s melancholic, Edward Gorey-esque fall 2005 collection.
Advised to dress in “technicolor and fairy dust,” guests — including Winona Ryder, Selma Blair, Mena Suvari, Debbie Harry and Jared Leto — got things off to a raucous start inside the tent adorned with thousands of fresh roses and a dance floor resembling the yellow brick road. Half-naked dancers, dressed as pixies and drenched in glitter and body paint, grooved atop platforms throughout the party, while Marc (along with his partner Robert Duffy) was quite the host, standing outside the entrance to welcome every guest. “Anyone who comes out to the opening of a store is someone I have to love,” said Jacobs. “I don’t know what I did in my life to deserve this.” Whatever he did, it brought the likes of Anna Wintour, Marilyn Manson and Francis Ford Coppola — as well as two characters wearing giant, flower-covered helmets — together in the same room.
