HOLLYWOOD — “In case anyone was wondering what it’s like to sing Elton John for Elton John, it’s really fucking weird,” quipped host Eric McCormack after performing at the Society of Singers’ Ella Award presentation, which feted the pop icon Monday at the BevHilton.
A flock of thrushes, including LeeAnn Rimes, Smokey Robinson, k.d. lang, Joss Stone and Barry Manilow, took the stage while reading lyrics off a visible teleprompter, prompting McCormack to dub the show “the hottest karaoke bar in America.”
The Ella Award honored John for his humanitarian efforts. All attendees were effusive in their praise, but none more so than Manilow, who offered John his hand in marriage before serenading the crowd with a rendition of “Your Song.”
While accepting the kudo, John politely declined Manilow’s offer, fearing there would be “too much fuss in front of the mirror” if the two were to tie the knot.
