“Thank God for George Clooney. Thank God for his bankability and box office,” declared helmer Peter Kosminsky at a powwow on politics in the movies at Geneva fest Cinema Tout Ecran (Oct. 31-Nov. 6). Clooney and partner Steven Soderbergh won praise for shooting politically themed pics for mainstream auds.
Kosminsky, best known for TV dramatizations of political controversies, expressed frustration at the difficulties helmers meet trying to finance political-themed pics. The spirit of local boy Jean-Luc Godard was keenly felt at the confab where Kosminsky shared top billing with Israeli helmer Amos Gitai. Fest’s top kudo went to Ruxandra Zenide’s “Ryna,” a Romania-set pic about a troubled teen battling with her macho dad.
