As the auctioneer for John Varvatos’ annual Stuart House fundraiser, Eric McCormack thought it would be a good idea to offer up Garry Shandling.
“There is no Mrs. Shandling,” he revealed to a gaggle of women bidders.
No takers, but Shandling did win something himself: a New York Fashion Week package.
A host of industryites, including Skip Brittenham and Heather Thomas, Keith Addis, and Bob and Linda Gersh, attended the third annual event, which has become so popular that it has almost outgrown Varvatos’ boutique and tented parking lot across from Morton’s. The benefit raised $150,000 for the Santa Monica-UCLA Rape Treatment Center.
Jackson Browne rocked the ‘hood, and Jennie Garth and Brooke Shields read stories to the rapt children. “This is definitely a little out of hand, but in a good way,” Varvatos said, as a line of people waited to get in. “We said when we first started this event that our five-year goal was the Hollywood Bowl.” Perhaps he was only half joking.
