HOLLYWOOD — For a change of pace, ESPY Award nominees hoped that 13 would prove to be a lucky number: On July 13 sports pros and their famous fans assembled at the Kodak Theater for the 13th annual event.
The ESPN kudocast, hosted by Matthew Perry — who couldn’t help taking a public jab at Tom Cruise‘s very public opinions on psychiatry — feted athletes in 36 categories.
“He says there is no such thing as chemical imbalances. Well, how would he explain what I’m about to do?” Perry asked the crowd as he pulled his pants down.
Revelers on hand at the ceremony included Oprah Winfrey, who presented the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, Jessica Simpson, Michael Vartan, Patrick Dempsey, LeBron James, Andy Roddick, racing phenom Danica Patrick and helmer Peter Berg, whose film “Friday Night Lights” beat out Oscar winner “Million Dollar Baby” in the sports movie category.
Following a performance by Destiny’s Child, the post-awards festivities continued at the Highlands, where Maria Sharapova and NBA star Baron Davis rubbed elbows with “Entourage” thesp Adrian Grenier, who admitted he “knows nothing about sports.”
