Beginning with a revolutionary “The Skin of Our Teeth” production in 1942, Kazan brought a raw theatricality to Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams’ classics: “All My Songs,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and “Sweet Bird of Youth.” Playwright and director put their considerable differences in politics aside in order for Kazan to direct Arthur Miller’s “After the Fall” in 1964. Shortly thereafter, the director retired from the legit scene that he had dominated for two decades and devoted himself to Hollywood, which by then had already awarded him two Oscars.
