Edith Head

Icons of the Century

Though she designed her last film 24 years ago, Edith Head remains the most recognizable costume designer in the world.

Her 35 Oscar nominations, eight statuettes and 750 film credits perfecting the screen images of stars like Clara Bow, Grace Kelly and Natalie Wood is unassailable.

Despite little formal training in sketching and sewing, she became the industry’s first breakout businesswoman, writing advice books and appearing regularly on Art Linketter’s “House Party.”

As evidence of her continuing influence, she was parodied as “Edna Mode” in “The Incredibles” and inspired They Might Be Giants to write the song, “She Thinks She’s Edith Head.”
