For the opening of her first boutique in L.A., Diane Von Furstenberg recently hosted one hot party. Literally. It was an unusually warm fall day, and the sun came blasting through the Melrose store’s shadeless windows during a luncheon for the designer’s Hollywood pals. (Conditions were even tougher outside, where a producer from an entertainment news show fainted from the heat.)
Still, that didn’t deter industry style hounds, along with Von Furstenberg’s mogul hubby, Barry Diller, from attending. Nia Vardalos caught up with her “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” producer Rita Wilson, while Julie Delpy, looking lovely in a black-and-white DVF wrap, noted to fellow guests, “I think you need boobs to wear this dress.” Sarah Wynter, Melissa George, Jamie Tisch and Taryn Manning also mingled in the crowd.
And despite her following in the entertainment biz, von Furstenberg insists she’s designing for the masses: “I am not the kind of brand that pushes things for people to wear. Stylists buy it. Celebrities wear it. But the clothes I design are not very expensive. I like that I don’t only dress people who are rich.”
