A master at generating publicity and sometimes humiliating critics and thesps alike, the self-proclaimed “Abominable Showman” rivaled Flo Ziegfeld as the most colorful producer in Broadway history.

But his legacy remains the shows. Merrick brought Broadway audiences everything from homegrown musicals (“Gypsy,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “Promises, Promises”) to imports from London (“Look Back in Anger,” “The Entertainer,” “Marat/Sade”) to Woody Allen’s one and only legit hit (“Play It Again, Sam”).
