Clive Davis

10 who mined the talent and shaped the labels

A lawyer who moved into an A&R position at Columbia Records, he would fill the rosters with hit makers in the rock era; he created and ran Arista Records for almost 30 years and then created J Records. He made the transition by attending the Monterey Pop Festival, which turned him on to acts he would bring to Columbia: Janis Joplin and the Electric Flag. From there he signed Blood, Sweat & Tears, Santana, Chicago, Billy Joel and Boz Scaggs. At Arista and J, he not only signed acts, he handpicked producers and songwriters to work with Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana and “American Idol” winners

Key signings: Janis Joplin, Alicia Keys, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith
