A lawyer who moved into an A&R position at Columbia Records, he would fill the rosters with hit makers in the rock era; he created and ran Arista Records for almost 30 years and then created J Records. He made the transition by attending the Monterey Pop Festival, which turned him on to acts he would bring to Columbia: Janis Joplin and the Electric Flag. From there he signed Blood, Sweat & Tears, Santana, Chicago, Billy Joel and Boz Scaggs. At Arista and J, he not only signed acts, he handpicked producers and songwriters to work with Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana and “American Idol” winners
