Sisters' foundation lends hand to needy families

WHO: 200 homeless kids and their moms

WHAT: Camp Planet Hope, founded 14 years ago by Kelly and Sharon Stone, gives needy families four days of free makeovers; clothes; medical, dental and vision care; and self-esteem-building workshops in the Santa Monica Mountains.

WHY: Gives kids the chance to experience a traditional summer camp full of swimming, arts and crafts, sports and campfire stories, as well as much-needed medical care. Moms begin camp with a makeover and then work on building resumes; speak one-on-one with counselors; and learn about housing, child care and employment opportunities. All kids leave with backpacks filled with back-to-school clothes and sneakers.

WHEN: Camp runs Aug. 28-Sept. 1.

HOW: Donate new sleeping bags and backpacks; jackets, sweat shirts and sneakers for teen boys; or plain ol’ cash. To donate, email

On Aug. 21, the Laugh Factory (8001 Sunset Blvd.) will host a blood drive from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Donors will receive gift bags and be entered in a raffle to win airline tickets, Apple iPods and Gucci sunglasses. Donors must be 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. To make an appointment, call Katherine at (323) 656-1336, ext. 203.
