Paul Newman / ‘The creative process’

Testimonial

Paul Newman has acted in two Zanuck productions over the years, “The Verdict” and “Road to Perdition” as well as two projects that the former Fox exec greenlit: “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “The Sting.”

“Butch” backstory: “George (Roy Hill) and I both pushed for Robert Redford to star in the film. I think Fox originally wanted Marlon Brando to star in it. As a studio executive, Dick Zanuck has excellent taste and knows how to work with creative people.”

Zanuck factor: “He works well with creative people. His presence is very graceful on the set. Compared to my experience with some other producers who are loud and noisy and difficult to get along with, Dick cares about the creative process more than the bottom line. When working between the studios and the set, he goes through the line of command. Actors aren’t privy to that grief.”

On “Perdition”: “It was a marvelous script. It had an excellent director and an extraordinary cast. How could you turn it down? Over the years, we’ve dealt with individual projects. If Dick thought he had something that I was right for, he’d send it to me.”

On a possible Newman-Redford reunion: “We’re still talking…so tell Dick.”
