Patrick Betz, Sr.

Former NBC Television exec

Former NBC Television exec Patrick Betz, Sr. died of natural causes Dec. 5 in Santa Clarita, Calif. He was 87.

Born in Illinois, he grew up in Iowa and Minnesota and began his career as a messenger at MGM. He worked as an editor, assistant director and producer on films including “A Lust to Kill.” While working at Universal, he made the transition to television, becoming a series exec at CBS and NBC. At NBC he served as head of current drama during the runs of shows including “Bonanza,” “Police Story,” “Police Woman” and “The Rockford Files.”

Betz created NBC’s story department, where he mentored many TV execs, writers, producers and educators.

He is survived by his wife Erica, four sons and several grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging.
