Former Goldwyn Girl, wife of Alfred Newman

Former Goldwyn Girl Martha Montgomery Newman died May 9 in Pacific Palisades, Calif. She was 84.

Newman was the wife of composer Alfred Newman. Born in Clarksdale, Miss., she graduated from the U. of Tennessee, and then started modeling in New York. She came to Hollywood under contract to 20th Century Fox, where she became a Goldwyn Girl as well as touring and performing with Danny Kaye.

In 1947, she married film composer Newman, who at the time was the head of the Fox music department.

She is survived by sons Thomas and David, both film composers and son Fred; daughter Maria, a violinist and composer and daughter Lucy as well as 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
