Tommy Lee passes test, but still second to 'Big Brother'

NBC’s “Tommy Lee Goes to College” recorded passable grades in its premiere Tuesday night, placing second to timeslot bully “Big Brother 6″ on CBS among young adults.

“Tommy Lee” certainly performed better than most of the Peacock’s sked this summer — and its presence energized the net’s entire night — but fourth-place NBC needs even bigger scores in weeks to come if it’s to increase its circulation heading into fall.

According to Nielsen, the 9 o’clock preem of “Tommy Lee Goes to College,” in which the rocker attends classes at the University of Nebraska, averaged a 2.5 rating/7 share in adults 18-49 and 5.22 million viewers overall. Second episode at 9:30 spiked to a 3.1/8 in the demo and 6.1 million.

This is a nice improvement over the 1.8 rating/5 share that reality dud “I Want to Be a Hilton” averaged in the slot for NBC this summer, but “Tommy Lee” fell shy of consistent CBS entry “Big Brother” in 18-49 (3.4/9, 8.70m). It won its hour among men 18-34 (2.1/7).

Show will air single half-hour segs at 9 beginning next week.

“Tommy Lee” lead-in “Meet Mister Mom” was more competitive at 8, posting its best scores to date (2.1/6 in 18-49, 5.13m), and 10 o’clock repeat drama “Law & Order: SVU” (3.1/9, 9.33m) rose to nine-week highs.

Also on the night, CBS’ “Rock Star: INXS” (3.0/8 in 18-49, 6.49m) continues to perform solidly behind “Big Brother” at 10, drawing its largest overall aud for any night. Fox’s “Teen Choice Awards” (2.0/6 in 18-49, 4.86m) fell to the lowest scores in its seven years on the net, down 23% year-to-year in 18-49; it did a modest 13 share in teens.

Cable nationals for Monday show Hallmark Channel’s original movie “A Man Who Became Pope” averaging 1.4 million viewers, a record weeknight aud for the net. And the season preem of MTV’s “My Super Sweet Sixteen” averaged 3.59 million viewers overall and a 30 share in female teens.
