Oscar gets new outlet

New deal will include a half-hour pre-show produced by TNT

HOLLYWOOD — TNT Latin America has nabbed pan-regional basic cable rights to the Oscars.

Starting in 2006, channel will air the Academy Awards live in 35 territories for three years. Previously net transmitted live broadcasts of the Oscars to just Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Venezuela.

New deal will include a half-hour pre-show produced by TNT, according to TNT VP and regional manager Rick Perez.

Unlike some local terrestrial TV channels with live broadcast rights, TNT eschews voiceovers for subtitled transmissions.

TNT, the region’s No. 1 net in the 18-49 age bracket, reaches 16 million subs. Sister net TCM, launched in September, reaches 2 million subs.

“Having these sister channels will allow us to take advantage of cross promotional opportunities, such as airing 31 days of past Oscar winners on TCM in the run up to the awards event on TNT,” said Perez.
