Exec acquires stockpile for $38.6 mil
BERLIN — Former Kirch exec Jan Mojto has acquired the last chunk of the Kirch library in a E30 million ($38.6 million) deal, becoming the main curator of one of the biggest program stockpiles in Europe.Agreement for German-language TV rights includes the formation of a 50-50 joint venture between Mojto and the insolvent Kirch Media, which went belly up three years ago. The German-lingo catalog was one of Kirch’s last major assets to be sold off. Among the titles are 5,000 Hollywood classics including “Citizen Kane” and “The Great Gatsby.” Mojto oversaw international sales and co-productions at Kirch Media before leaving in 2002 to launch his EOS Entertainment production and distribution shingle. Last year, he took over Beta Film, Kirch’s international sales division, along with international rights to thousands of hours of film and series from the library, for a reported $75 million. He also nabbed Unitel, a Kirch-owned production company and catalog of classical music programs spanning 40 years. Local observers reckon it was Mojto’s familiarity with the library that convinced Kirch insolvency administrator Michael Jaffe to accept his bid over one from pubcaster ARD’s sales division Telepool.
