Int'l pacts flourish in days after mart

Like all TV and film markets, last week’s Mipcom in Cannes was a movable feast, with companies continuing to make program sales deals and other announcements in the days after the trade bazaar wrapped Friday.

Among the deals echoing off the Croisette:

  • Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana unveiled a partnership with ST Electronics and the Media Development Authority of Singapore to produce 10 direct-to-video and three animated series.

    To launch the partnership, the parties will co-fund, co-produce and co-distribute “The Future Is Wild,” a half-hour eco-adventure series in 3-D.

  • East Coast-based Cableready licensed several of its latest docs abroad, including “Combover: The Movie” to Israel’s satcaster Yes, “Let’s Shop” to Fox Japan and a war doc called “Fire and Ice” to Finland’s YLE.

  • Discovery Networks Intl. is extending its global high-definition brand Discovery HD by launching in Japan and Canada.

    The company’s first 24-hour high-def net in Asia will launch on the J:Com platform in Japan on Dec. 14, reaching a subscriber base of 500,000 homes; in Canada, Discovery HD will launch as a category two digital specialty service by year’s end.

    Discovery HD has aired as a branded block in South Korea since February and begins in Germany and Austria in November.

  • Canada’s Distraction picked up two additions to its nascent Ready-to-Air catalog of formats at Mipcom — “Off the Deep End” and “Turnaround: Small Business Makeover,” both shows originated in the U.S.

    Former is an underwater magic extravaganza, shot in the Caribbean for U.S. broadcast on NBC Nov. 13. It features Penn & Teller and was produced by the Wolper Organization. “Turnaround,” which offers advice to small businesses from key CEOs, was produced by Weller Grossman and aired on CNN.

  • Clear Channel TV will produce and distribute a show paying tribute to the late Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees; live concert will feature the group’s hit songs. CCETV also will produce a behind-the-scenes TV series about the making of the concert and issue DVDs of both.

  • Holland’s Off the Fence inked a deal with producer Bang Singapore and the Media Development Authority of Singapore to co-produce 50 hours of docs from various factual genres. They include archaeological mystery “Guge — Lost Kingdom of Tibet,” to be produced for France 5 and Discovery, and “How Man’s China,” a six-hour conservation series based on China’s leading explorer and his expeditions.

  • Fireworks ignited a raft of deals for TV series “Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda,” starring Kevin Sorbo. Sony’s AXN channels picked up the actioner in Japan, Israel and Central Europe. Universal’s cabler Calle 13 in Spain and Tele Munchen in Germany both inked for season five, while Greece’s ERT snapped up the first 44 episodes.
