Verizon Communications agreed to carry news, cartoons and movies from Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting on a new fiber-optic network, bolstering plans to compete against cable and satellite television companies.
FiOS TV, which starts this year, will air Turner networks including TBS, TNT, the Cartoon Network and CNN, New York-based Verizon said in a statement. Some programming will be in high definition, the company said.
Verizon, the largest U.S. phone company, is building a fiber-optic network to deliver television as well as calling and high-speed Internet access to more than 100 U.S. communities. FiOS TV has similar agreements with Viacom’s Showtime Networks and NBC Universal Cable for channels including Bravo.
