USA’s ‘Ring’ cycle ad-free

Net premieres 'Emile Griffith' sans commercials

NEW YORK — USA Network has scheduled the premiere of the documentary “Ring of Fire: The Emile Griffith Story” without commercial interruptions.

Move will mark the first time USA has played a program uninterrupted. The network has signed Saab Cars USA as “presenting sponsor”; the automaker will get only a 70-second spot at the beginning of “Ring of Fire” and a 70-second spot at the end.

USA bought the doc six weeks ago at Sundance.

Directed by Dan Klores and Ron Berger, “Ring of Fire” deals with the ramifications of Griffith’s 1962 killing of opponent Kid Paret in the ring. Griffith was enraged at Paret’s public taunting of him as a homosexual. Docu mixes archival footage with interviews of members of both families and with writers including Jimmy Breslin, Pete Hamill, Neal Gabler and the late Jack Newfield.

Last month, Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment engineered a joint buy with the producer Scott Rudin to make a theatrical scripted docudrama out of “Ring of Fire.”
