Cabler gets 'Starter' started
USA Network is fast-tracking development on a six-hour limited series based on Gigi Levangie Grazer’s bestselling novel “The Starter Wife.”
Cabler has acquired rights to the book, which Grazer will exec produce. Feature writing team Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott (“Runaway Bride”) will write the script and also exec produce.
NBC U TV Studio is producing with 3 Arts Entertainment. 3 Arts’ Stephanie Davis and Howard Klein also will exec produce.
Should the project get the official greenlight, production will begin in spring.
Sexy satire concerns a divorcee trying to reinvent herself after years of marriage to a Hollywood studio head.
“The Starter Wife” is the type of project “that could be a cornerstone of our big event programming for 2006,” said USA exec veep of programming Jeff Wachtel. “It’s big, it’s fun, it’s fearless and it will certainly create a stir.”
Grazer, wife of Brian Grazer, wrote the Julia Roberts/Susan Sarandon starrer “Stepmom.” Her bestselling books “Maneater” and “Rescue Me” have been optioned by Mandalay Pictures and Fox Searchlight Pictures, respectively.
McGibbon and Parriott are writing “Rapunzel Unbraided” for Disney. They worked on “Chicken Little” and Tim Burton’s upcoming “Frankenweenie.”
