Monroe's star shines at Queen Mary
HOLLYWOOD — To those who rummaged through Marilyn Monroe’s possessions Thursday at the unveiling of “Marilyn Monroe: The Exhibit” aboard the Queen Mary, it appeared as though diamonds were, in fact, among the iconic starlet’s best friends — along with mother of pearl, gold and racy lingerie.
However, at a discussion before the big reveal, panelists revealed a different Marilyn, far removed from the glamour and allure for which the blonde bombshell is renowned.
“More than anything, the Marilyn I knew was natural. She didn’t speak in that high voice you hear in her movies, and she never wore makeup,” said June DiMaggio, niece of Marilyn’s ex-husband Joe DiMaggio.
Other panelists included CMG prexy Mark Roesler, who handles Monroe’s estate; Robert Otto, whose collection of Marilyn memorabilia was on display; and Playboy tycoon Hugh Hefner. Monroe, who posed in the frosh issue of Playboy, is featured again in the December edition.
