Thesp shows celebs 'How It Goes'

“I feel sorry for Ben Stiller,” co-star Amanda Peet revealed at Sunday’s B Bar party for “This Is How It Goes.”

It was the opening night of Neil LaBute‘s new play, and throughout the evening Stiller’s racist character had to directly address the starry preem audience in the Public’s tiny Anspacher Theater.

There in the audsat Angela Bassett; Philip Seymour Hoffman; Jeffrey Katzenberg; Tony Kushner; Jimmy Smits; and Carole Shorenstein Hays, who holds the commercial rights to the play.

“Hoffman and Kushner are out there!” Stiller warned Peet –during his first break in the play — who said she did her best to ignore the famous faces.

Sunday’s first-nighters were politely quiet, but Stiller’s controversial character has provoked some interesting comments in earlier perfs. At the B Bar, Stiller recalled his most memorable catcall so far. “Someone yelled out, ‘You’re so full of shit!’ ” he said. “It puts you on your guard. It makes for exciting theater.”
