‘Sokka’ kicks off first skein

World Brief

JOHANNESBURG — One youngster’s dreams of international soccer stardom will come true in pubcaster channel SABC 1’s new reality TV show “Sokka Kings.”

About 3,000 aspiring players ages 16 and under gathered at a Johannesburg sports stadium Feb. 14 to kick off the search for players for the skein, which bows in March.

Backed by the South African Football Assn., the winner will be sent for trials with the U.K.’s prestigious Tottenham Hotspur club, says SAC1 brand manager Nondumiso Ngobese.

“Sokka Kings” director Ivan Maclennan hopes the show will become an annual event. “The talent we have seen has been fantastic,” he says. “I hope that 50 of the top players from here will be part of our 2010 World Cup squad.”
