Series puts Fox in a ratings fix

Sweep a downer for network

While Tuesday night’s marathon World Series game was a ratings winner for Fox, the Chicago White Sox sweep of the Houston Astros was far from what the net was hoping for.

A 14th-inning victory for the White Sox over the Astros gave the boys from the Windy City a stranglehold in the best-of-seven series, one year after the Boston Red Sox swept the Fall Classic in the minimum four games.

According to Nielsen in-home viewing estimates, Tuesday’s game (8:35 p.m.-2:20 a.m. ET) averaged a 5.7 rating/18 share in adults 18-49 and 16.65 million viewers overall, peaking in the midnight ET half-hour but holding up pretty well in the late going.

Although Fox won the night in key measures, Tuesday’s Game 3 repped a 30% decline in 18-49 from last year’s Red Sox-St. Louis Cardinals contest (8.2/22).

On the entertainment side Tuesday, CBS leadoff drama “NCIS” continued its hot streak (4.3/11 in 18-49, 18.01m), matching its series high in 18-49 and establishing a total-viewer record for the fourth straight week.

ABC’s “Commander in Chief” had another solid outing (4.4/10 in 18-49, 15.62m), ranking second to baseball in the 9 o’clock hour in 18-49, 25-54 (6.0/13) and total viewers. Net also got a boost at 8 from its annual airing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (4.0/11, 10.98m).

And at 10 opposite a repeat of NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” (4.0/10, 11.32m), the Alphabet’s “Boston Legal” (3.5/9, 10.94m) inched up while CBS rookie drama “Close to Home” (2.9/7, 9.25m) fell to series lows.

The conclusion of two-part movie “Human Trafficking” scored for Lifetime from 9 to 11 (2.1/5 in 18-49, 5.73m), adding viewers from its Monday perf. It tied FX series “Nip/Tuck” as cable’s top program of the night in 18-49 and was easily the most-watched cable show overall.
