SABC adds channels

World Brief

The South African Broadcasting Corp. has been given the greenlight for two regional indigenous-language TV stations.

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) last week granted the pubcaster licenses for the two proposed channels, SABC 4 and SABC 5.

Icasa said the issuing of the licenses was, however, suspended until the SABC had arranged appropriate funding, which might come from taking advertising.

Icasa chairman Mandla Langa said English would not be allowed on either channel, except for soundbites on current affairs or news programs.
