B'caster goes into business with Popp

BERLIN — Broadcaster ProSiebenSat 1 will set up a joint-production company with “Verliebt in Berlin” (That’s Life) producer Christian Popp in the wake of the show’s huge success in Germany.

In October, Producers at Work will launch as a service provider for ProSiebenSat 1 as well as an independent production company.

Popp, who will manage PAW, is a producer at RTL Group-owned Grundy, where he’s responsible for content and handles development of telenovelas and other programs such as RTL’s hit soap “Good Times, Bad Times.”

“The success of ‘That’s Life’ shows just how important daily TV fiction is for a broadcaster. That’s why we decided to strengthen this particular expertise within the group,” said ProSiebenSat 1 topper Guillaume de Posch.

In related news, ProSiebenSat 1’s classic-series channel, Kabel 1, has named Thilo Proff head of programming. Proff, who was chief editor at the web, will move into the newly created position July 1. He will concentrate on new-program development. Rene Carl, deputy director of information and magazines, succeeds Proff as editor-in-chief.

Kabel 1 airs mostly classic U.S. series such as “Dallas,” “Dynasty” and “MASH” and films including the pics in the “Dirty Harry” and “Halloween” franchises along with reality and docu-soap formats.
