Some logistics and pointers

Thinking of attending the American Film Market? Some logistics and pointers:

Getting in

If you haven’t registered, there’s still time. Full-market badges (Nov. 2-9) will set you back $775. Half-market badges cost $295 and are valid Nov. 6-9. Day badges are $250. (Buyers badges cost $495 but buyer status must have been approved by IFTA by Oct. 8.) Go to: www.ifta-online.org/afm/documents/afm2005_ registration.pdf

Where to go

AFM ground zero is the Loews Hotel on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, Calif. The Loews plays host to the majority of sales companies selling wares at the indie film market. Neighboring Le Merigot Hotel houses two floors of exhibitors — one more than last year — video screening rooms and seminar space. About 410 exhibitors will be spread out over 161,000 square feet of exhibition space at the two hotels.

Where to park

A parking pass may be purchased from AFM for $100. It’s recommended for daily marketgoers who need to come and go several times a day. Parking-passes give in-and-out privileges at the beachfront lots at the pier and just south of the Casa del Mar Hotel, as well as the city of Santa Monica’s lots 1-8 along Second and Fourth streets, as well as Santa Monica Place.

Shuttle transportation

Buses will run on the hour between the AFM (from the Loews) and AFI Fest at the Arclight Theater in Hollywood. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., shuttle service to the area parking lots, hotels and theaters/screening rooms runs about every eight minutes from various locations around Santa Monica (see bus icons on map).

Screenings

More than 500 films will unspool on 31 screens around Santa Monica over the weeklong market. Five new purpose-built HD screens at the Fairmont Hotel, dubbed the Fairmont 5 (address below), are designated for digi-Beta and HD-cam projections. Theatrical screenings will take place at five commercial theaters (see below) around the city. Le Merigot has two video screening venues and a room with a plasma screen, mostly used for works-in-progress.
