Pic didn’t exactly ‘Flow’ easily

Producer, director 'Hustle' in filmmaking

NEW YORK — Sundance Film Fest hit “Hustle & Flow” unspooled at the Directors Guild Friday as part of the Variety Screening Series. After the screening, writer-director Craig Brewer talked about the many reasons studios rejected the initial script, including the fact that “there was issues of me being white, and from the South,” making a pic about DJay, a black pimp from Memphis. “They wouldn’t have had a problem with me being white if we had laughed at DJay … if we don’t want to identify with DJay,” he added.

Daily Variety‘s Ian Mohr moderated a panel discussion that included producers Stephanie Allain and John Singleton and thesp DJ Qualls.
