Bound, gagged body retrieved from Parana River
BUENOS AIRES — Former Fox Sports and HBO Latin America exec Claudio Nozzi has been shot dead while scouting locations in northern Argentina on the border with Paraguay.
A naval patrol boat found the 46-year-old’s body floating on the Parana River in Paraguayan waters near Itati, a city in Argentina’s northeastern province of Corrientes. Police said he probably died March 9.
He had four bullet wounds in the chest and one in the forehead. His hands were tied and mouth gagged. Nozzi’s $300,000 yacht was anchored nearby.
Police suspect Paraguayan pirates boarded the yacht, killing him and taking valuables. Gangs roam the river, which separates Argentina and Paraguay, stealing money and goods to trade with drug traffickers and cigarette smugglers. Nozzi’s companions — two men and a woman — have been detained for questioning.
Nozzi, an Argentinean, recently branched out on his own as a film producer after years in the cable TV business.
He had a brush with death in May 2003 when three kidnappers forced their way into his car at a stoplight in San Isidro, an upscale suburb of Buenos Aires. Nozzi escaped by jumping out of the car while in motion.
