National Org. of Women honor industry favs

A quintet of women from the media and business worlds were feted Thursday by California NOW for their efforts in reflecting the concerns of women in their professional lives.

All of the honorees — HBO’s Keri Putnam, actress Laura Dern, music entrepreneur Tracey Edmonds, Act One staffing agency founder Janice Howroyd and Variety‘s Madelyn Hammond – put the emphasis on “the community of women” that helped them get where they are, paying homage to their female mentors and role models as well as to bosses, colleagues, husbands and families.

Hammond recalled the importance of the late producer-executive Dawn Steel in helping her climb the rungs of her career ladder, from Coca-Cola all the way to becoming associate publisher of Variety and publisher of VLife. Hammond said like so many women, she is “no longer just organizing the meetings, she’s actually running them.”
