NBC News officially announced the promotion of Steve Capus to senior veep, a move that takes the former “Nightly News” exec producer out of the running for the prexy job being vacated by Neal Shapiro.
Capus will oversee “Nightly News” and all other newsgathering, special reports and elections coverage.
His No. 2, John Reiss, will become exec producer of “Nightly News With Brian Williams,” managing the day-to-day of the top-rated broadcast.
“I know it’s in good hands on an hour-by-hour basis with John Reiss,” Capus said.
The newscast is facing a tough challenge from ABC’s “World News Tonight,” helped by ABC’s surging primetime.
After Shapiro asked to be released from his contract, Capus was thought to be a possible candidate to succeed him as prexy of NBC News. But sources said Capus is not in the running, and so far Shapiro, who announced both promotions, hasn’t left the job.
