Mohr will make ’em laff over at Sony

Thesp's Giraffe moseys over to Pix TV

Comedian Jay Mohr has sealed an overall deal with Sony Pictures TV, where he’ll set up his Giraffe Prods. shingle.

Under the new deal, Mohr will develop projects for broadcast and cable through Sony, where he’ll have an office on the lot.

Mohr most recently hosted the Sundance Channel’s “Festival Dailies,” a daily half-hour program broadcast from the Sundance Film Festival, in early January.

Thesp earned raves for his turn as Peter Dragon in Fox’s short-lived series “Action.” He also appeared in the features “Jerry Maguire,” “Go,” “Seeing Other People” and the upcoming “King’s Ransom.”

Additionally Mohr was an exec producer and the host of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” Reality skein’s first installment earned an Emmy nomination, while its second edition last summer earned strong ratings. But a hastily assembled third edition performed poorly, and the Peacock wound up yanking the finale (which eventually ran on Comedy Central).

Mohr responded by criticizing NBC on his Web site (Daily Variety, Oct. 8). “Comic” also ruffled some feathers in the standup comic community due to pre-existing relationships between producers and some of the show’s contestants.

Hyperion last year released Mohr’s book “Gasping for Airtime,” his take on serving as a writer and performer on “Saturday Night Live.”

He previously held a two-year first-look deal at Disney, where he briefly hosted the series “Mohr Sports” for ESPN and first formed Giraffe Prods.
