Gustavo Cisneros has been tapped Mipcom’s Personality of the Year.
The chairman-CEO of the Cisneros Group of Companies will receive the award during a gala dinner Oct. 19 during the 21st edition of the annual trade show in Cannes. The group’s key holdings include Venezuela’s Venevision and the leading Hispanic network in the States, Univision.
The privately held Cisneros Group owns or holds interests in 75 companies with operations in more than 80 countries, and has annual revenues exceeding $3.5 billion. Through its leading brands and services, it reaches 550 million Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking consumers in the Americas and Europe.
The Mipcom Personality of the Year Award was created in 1989 to pay tribute to exceptional careers in and contributions to the international TV industry. Previous recipients include Canal Plus founder Andre Rousselet, CNN founder Ted Turner, Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone and RTL CEO Gerhard Zeiler.
In a related development at Mipcom, Latin telenovelas will be the focus of a separate minimart during the five-day trade show. Reed Midem will launch the Telenovelas Screenings in Cannes on Oct. 16. It’s unclear whether the event is a one-off or will continue in successive years.
Participants will include Mexico’s Televisa and TV Azteca, Venezuela’s RCTV and Venevision, Brazil’s Globo and Colombia’s Caracol and RCN.
Miami-based sales firm Tepuy, which includes programs produced by No. 2 U.S. Hispanic net Telemundo in its lineup, also will participate.
“The telenovela industry is a great business, generating more than $130 million a year for many international TV stations in Europe, the United States and Asia,” said Paul Johnson, director of the TV division of Reed Midem, a sister company of Variety.
The Screenings will take place at the Noga Hilton Hotel in Cannes, with all programs to be presented in digital format.
