Collard greens and monkey bread were in no short supply at Thursday’s “Beauty Shop” preem, which dutifully lived up to the pic’s “Hotlanta” theme.
After-party was held at a former Circuit City space in Westwood, made over to resemble a beauty salon, complete with manicure stations, free makeup and pink frou-frou drinks.
Collards actually play a part in the pic, as the buttery veggies that rail-thin Andie MacDowell refuses to eat. When she finally succumbs, the result is a more cushioned derriere.
McDowell said the “big butt” idea was hers. “They gave me a lot of freedom and I milked it,” she said, adding that there was a healthy improv spirit on the set.
Living up to her regal moniker, pic’s star, Queen Latifah, held court on a long white sofa. “We had a release date before we had a script, so we had to tear apart the first act, the second act, all while we were shooting,” she said.
MGM vice chair Chris McGurk said the night was “bittersweet,” considering the studio’s impending sale. “I feel good about what we did with the company for investors and stockholders, but it’s tough to see the end of an era.”
