HOLLYWOOD — Par’s preem for “Hustle & Flow” Wednesday was a down-home affair — the Cabana Club after-party was catered by Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles, helmer Craig Brewer‘s mother was there and Memphis rapper Al Kapone performed.
Born in Virginia and raised in Memphis, Brewer said his film reflected his surroundings.
“I never thought I was making a black movie,” he said. “I was making a Memphis movie. In Memphis, black and white are on a collision course; that’s the South.”
Cinerama Dome preem and party was an extravagant showing for Paramount Classics. But the Sundance pickup holds a special place as Brad Grey‘s first acquisition as Par topper.
“I’d like to think this represents how we’ll bet on people we believe in,” Grey said. “Our company is uniquely suited to market and distribute this film.”
