Reality skein 'You're Hired!' targets out of work
JOHANNESBURG — A new reality series is tackling one of post-apartheid South Africa’s biggest problems — unemployment.
The jobless rate is around 40% despite steady economic growth.
Now pubcaster channel SABC2 has made the job hunt the theme of a new show, “You’re Hired!”, which started airing May 14.
The winning contestant in each episode of the 13-part series will win a guaranteed six-month position with a company.
SABC2 believes the show will benefit people besides the 13 job-winners. All 338 semi-finalists will gain experience in applying for a job and viewers will learn from watching the process.
Produced by Urban Brew, “You’re Hired!” got more than 3,770 applications for a variety of entry-level and junior jobs including waiter, ambulance assistant, passenger-liner host, stage dancer, aircraft cleaner and high-rise window cleaner.
Recruitment partner Drake Intl. selects 12 candidates for the employer interview phase and the two finalists join host Bob Mabena in the studio.
The final decision is left to the viewers who cast their votes by phone or by SMS.
