Oscar winner offers helping hand to hospital
When deciding upon which charities to aid with his star power — and coin — Tom Hanks relies on a process of elimination.
“The way I see it, there are two situations that everyone will inevitably face: baggage claim and the emergency room,” Hanks said Saturday at the Caritas Gala, where he and wife Rita Wilson were feted for their service to St. John’s Health Center.
“As for baggage claim, there’s no improving that hell on Earth, so I threw my support behind our local hospital.”
Hanks, who resides in West Los Angeles, was particularly enthused by the notion of serving Santa Monica, where St. John’s is located.
“Whenever you tell people that you live in Santa Monica, their eyes light up with envy,” he said. “They learned all about Santa Monica from ‘Three’s Company.’ They even think that there are still apartments for rent in Santa Monica. Little do they know, paradise can be pretty crowded — especially whenever there’s a farmers market at the Third Street Promenade.”
