DirecTV bows Mandarin net

InfoNews to be based in Hong Kong

Seeking to broaden its programming platform among Asian viewers in the U.S., DirecTV is launching Phoenix InfoNews, a 24-hour Mandarin-language news net.

Hong Kong-based channel will provide a mix of general and financial news with a pan-Asian and global focus. It will be available as part of the satcaster’s MandarinDirect package, which includes Chinese general-entertainment web PhoenixTV, launched in 2001.

DirecTV’s other Chinese-language package, Jadeworld, includes five different channels in Mandarin and Cantonese and has been available since 2003.
