SINGAPORE — Hi-definition TV is making small inroads in Asia.
The 1.7 million subscribers of the South Korean platform Korea Digital Broadcasting (Skylife) now have access to Discovery HD Theater as a program block on SkyHD, the country’s first 24-hour, exclusively high-def network.
Discovery HD Theater unspooled Feb. 1 as a one-hour block, Monday through Friday, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., with encore telecast on the weekend.
This follows Discovery’s December announcement of its intention to offer the HD network worldwide, focusing in markets where HDTV is gaining a foothold.
Meanwhile, Discovery Networks Asia has commissioned U.K.-based Lion Television to produce “History of Singapore,” its first documentary shot entirely in high-def, to celebrate Singapore’s 40th anniversary. The four one-hour episodes will air on the Discovery Channel in the fourth quarter of 2005.
