Patrick Frater has been named Asia editor of Variety and Daily Variety and will make his base in Hong Kong beginning in July.
Appointment reflects that region’s growing importance as a hub for the entertainment industry and the corresponding desire of Variety to establish a greater presence in the area, said editor-in-chief Peter Bart.
For the past eight years, Frater has been based in London, working as international editor for Screen Intl. He also has written for Investors Chronicle, a magazine published by the Financial Times. Fluent in French and German, and now studying Cantonese, Frater holds a degree from the London School of Economics.
In his new role, Frater will cover major stories in the region and oversee the dozen correspondents reporting for Variety in that part of the world. Vicki Rothrock, Variety‘s correspondent in Hong Kong, also will report to Frater.
